A high-voltage power line connecting Romania and Moldova will be named the “Trump Liberty Line,” the U.S. Embassy in Chișinău announced Monday. The project is backed by a $130 million investment from the U.S. government and aims to strengthen Moldova’s energy security and independence.
The U.S. Embassy presented the initiative in a post on the X platform, describing it as a strategic energy infrastructure project. Moldova’s government said through its spokesperson, Dumitru Ciorici, that it supports initiatives that benefit citizens and strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.
Romanian officials did not immediately comment on the name or the power line project.
Moldova meets most of its electricity needs through existing connections with Romania and Ukraine. These flows have previously been disrupted by Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, heightening concerns about supply security.
The project’s name is part of a growing series of international initiatives associated with the name of U.S. President Donald Trump. Reuters cites among them a proposed transport corridor in Armenia and a planned military base in Poland.
