Eugen Osmochescu, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, stated that unification with Romania could become an option if the country's path towards EU membership is blocked after 2028.
In an interview, he emphasized that the main objective remains the signing of an accession treaty to the EU by the end of 2028, but acknowledged that political leaders might consider alternatives in case of stagnation in the process. Moldova is facing pressure from Russia and needs tangible progress from Brussels. Osmochescu mentioned that his country does not have the military capabilities of Ukraine and highlighted the importance of opening the first "cluster" of accession negotiations.
He also discussed the possibility of an "associated member" status in the EU, which could help strengthen reforms. Osmochescu acknowledged that unification with Romania would reshape Moldova's identity, but emphasized the existing cultural and familial ties between the two countries.
