Romania’s Prime Minister, Luca Niculescu, stated on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in an interview with TV Moldova, that any possible unification of Romania with the Republic of Moldova will take place only if the citizens of both states want it. He specified that, at present, Bucharest’s priority is strengthening bilateral relations and bringing the Republic of Moldova closer to the European Union.
"There are many ties between our countries and, obviously, this is a debate that exists and that may also arise in some difficult contexts. I am telling you very clearly that it will happen when the citizens of the two countries want it. For now, we want to bring Romania and the Republic of Moldova closer together and, even more, bring the Republic of Moldova closer to the European Union, to create these bridges, and also to create connections between us," stated Luca Niculescu, who on Tuesday made his first foreign visit to Chişinău.
