Any potential unification of Romania and the Republic of Moldova will depend on the will of the citizens of the two states, Prime Minister Luca Niculescu said on Tuesday in Chișinău, in an interview with TVR MOLDOVA.
The head of government emphasized that Romania’s current priority is to strengthen relations with the Republic of Moldova and support its rapprochement with the European Union. The prime minister noted that there are numerous ties between the two countries and that the issue of unification may arise in public debate, including in difficult contexts.
“It will happen when the citizens of the two states want it,” Luca Niculescu said, referring to a potential unification project. He added that, for the time being, the authorities are seeking to create more bridges and connections between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
The statement reiterates the position that such a decision cannot be imposed politically, but should reflect the will expressed by the citizens of both states. The prime minister indicated that rapprochement with the European Union and the development of bilateral cooperation are the immediate objectives.
