President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated in an interview for the Hungarian publication Válasz Online that unification with Romania could represent a solution for guaranteeing the country’s security and freedom, in the context of threats coming from Russia. However, she acknowledged that, at present, the project does not enjoy sufficient popular support.
The statement comes after Maia Sandu said that she would vote for the unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania if a referendum on this issue were organized. Asked about her position, the president explained that it is determined by the need to identify solutions for protecting the country from security risks.
“I want my country to be safe and I want my country to be free. Imagine that Russia is approaching your borders. You have to look for solutions, even if they may seem unusual to you,” Maia Sandu stated, according to sources cited by Mediafax and Timpul.
The president emphasized that the authorities in Chișinău are currently pursuing integration into the European Union, an objective supported by the majority of the population. “At this moment, we do not have sufficient popular support for this solution. However, we have a majority that supports integration into the EU, and that is why we are pursuing this objective with such determination,” she noted.
Thus, European integration remains the main direction for the Republic of Moldova, while the idea of unification with Romania is presented as a possible security solution, without sufficient popular support at the current stage.
