President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu held meetings in Budapest on Saturday, October 24, with Hungarian President András Baka and Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The discussions focused on Moldova’s European path, economic and energy cooperation, and regional security.
A central topic was the opening of the final two negotiating clusters for Moldova’s accession to the European Union. Four clusters were opened this year, and the officials discussed the steps needed to advance the negotiations. They reaffirmed that the European Union’s enlargement represents an investment in the security of the entire European community.
The meetings also addressed Ukraine’s resistance, Russia’s hybrid threats, and repeated violations of Moldova’s airspace by Russian drones and missiles.
The visit marks Maia Sandu’s first trip to Hungary. The head of state traveled to Budapest at the invitation of Prime Minister Péter Magyar to attend events marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 anti-communist Revolution. Moldova and Hungary signed a strategic partnership declaration in 2020, which includes support for European integration and cooperation in the fields of the economy, energy, security, education, and culture.
