The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, will make her first official visit to Hungary on October 23–24, at the invitation of Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The visit will take place in Budapest and will include participation in events marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, as well as bilateral meetings on relations between the two countries.
On October 23, Maia Sandu will participate, alongside other heads of state and government, in the commemorative events. A day later, she will meet with President András Baka and Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
The discussions will focus on bilateral cooperation, economic relations, the Republic of Moldova’s European path, and regional security. The two states signed a strategic partnership declaration in 2020, through which Hungary pledged its support for the Republic of Moldova’s European integration and the development of economic cooperation.
The visit comes as Hungary has blocked, according to some European and Ukrainian diplomats, a procedural step concerning the opening of the last two negotiating clusters for Moldova and Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
