The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated at the Moldova Security Forum that her country would be safer if it united with Romania, but such a decision can only be made with the support of the majority of citizens. The head of state noted that, according to polls, this majority does not currently exist.
Maia Sandu said that the debate on Unification began on the very first day of the Republic of Moldova’s independence and is related to history, identity, the economy, and security. She referred to the effects of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact and the escalation of regional threats, which, she says, have brought the subject back into public attention.
However, the President emphasized that there is a majority in favor of European integration. In her view, joining the European Union, even though it is not a defense alliance, would increase the Republic of Moldova’s level of security.
Maia Sandu also recalled the declaration adopted by the Parliament of Romania in 2018, on the occasion of the centenary of the Great Union, as well as the debates held over the years by Romanian political formations. She reiterated that any potential Unification must be decided by citizens, while respecting the will of the majority.
