President Maia Sandu has convened a meeting of the National Security Council (CNS) for the coming days, during which a large-scale cyberattack currently affecting the Republic of Moldova will be assessed and response measures will be examined.
The Electronic Governance Agency (AGE) announced on Wednesday that, following the cyberattack on government information systems, data pertaining to approximately 750,000 IDNPs (personal identification numbers, equivalent to Romania’s CNP — ed.) had been extracted without authorization.
Serghei Diaconu, director of the National Crisis Management Center, said that the data extracted by hackers cannot be used directly for criminal purposes. Instead, scammers may contact citizens, posing as representatives of a bank, customs authorities, or other institutions, addressing them by their first and last names and providing other details from the stolen data in order to request additional information.
