The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova will hold hearings on Tuesday concerning the recent cyberattacks, after the opposition called for the issue to be examined. The announcement was made by PAS MP Lilian Carp, while Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said an assessment was necessary to establish responsibility and identify cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
The cyberattack led to the unauthorized extraction of the personal data of more than 750,000 Moldovans. The hackers attempted to access information associated with one million identification numbers. The stolen data reportedly included names, information about family members, pensions, driving licences and some financial data.
Grosu said that both the Government and Parliament would analyze the incident. He warned that artificial intelligence could be used to identify vulnerabilities and called for all computer systems to be checked, including the one used at Chișinău International Airport “Eugen Doga.”
The speaker of Parliament stressed that the fact that the airport’s system is not connected to the internet is not sufficient to eliminate the risks. The authorities say the attack was stopped, while checks of the affected systems are continuing.
