Farmers in the Republic of Moldova have resumed protests with agricultural machinery near the village of Abaclia, Basarabeasca District, dissatisfied with the situation in the sector and the possible increase in VAT on cereals and oilseeds. The footage was published by Alexandr Slusari, president of the Farmers’ Force Association.
Farmers are calling for the 8% VAT rate to be maintained, the licensing of cereal and sunflower seed imports to be extended at least until December 31, 2026, and the excise duty on diesel purchased between June 1 and December 1, 2026, to be reimbursed.
Protesters oppose the plan to increase VAT from 8% to 12% and are also raising concerns about diesel excise duties and income tax for peasant farms. The association announced as early as September 14 that it could organize a rally on the day the 2027 fiscal policy is voted on in the second reading, including with agricultural machinery.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry says it is reviewing the demands and will continue dialogue with farmers and sector associations. The institution notes that some requests fall under the authority of several institutions, while the final decision on fiscal policy belongs to Parliament.
