The draft law initiated by USR parliamentarians Sorin Șipoș, Cynthia Păun, and Vlad Șendroiu aims to modify the national decoration system of Romania. According to the proposal, decorations will be automatically revoked from individuals definitively sentenced to custodial sentences, regardless of the manner of execution, as well as from those who collaborated with the Securitate.
Vlad Șendroiu emphasized that this law serves justice in memory of the victims of the communist regime, prohibiting the awarding of decorations to those who terrorized their fellow citizens. The project also includes the publication of a list of decorated individuals who had connections with the Securitate, ensuring transparency of information. The Chancellery of Orders will request a declaration from each member regarding their status as a collaborator of the Securitate.
The initiators argue that decorations should be reserved for those who have provided exceptional services to the Romanian state, and their retention by convicted individuals undermines the values they represent.
