President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu signed decrees on Thursday revoking the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova from three people: Iurie Cara, Andrei Safonov and Serghei Verdeș. The decision concerns two people associated with the separatist structures in Tiraspol and a citizen whom the authorities say obtained citizenship in violation of the legal procedure.
Iurie Cara and Andrei Safonov are members of the “so-called legislature of the separatist regime in Tiraspol.” According to the authorities in Chișinău, they allegedly participated in adopting unconstitutional acts that violated the rights of citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the Transnistrian region.
The two are also accused of promoting the ideology of the “Russian world” and supporting the continued presence of Russian troops on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
In the case of Serghei Verdeș, the decision to revoke his citizenship was made after it was determined that it had allegedly been obtained in violation of legal provisions, despite the negative opinion issued by the Intelligence and Security Service.
The procedure was initiated by the Public Services Agency, based on the findings of the Intelligence and Security Service and the provisions of the Citizenship Law of the Republic of Moldova. The decrees were signed by Maia Sandu on Thursday.
