Traian Băsescu urges Siegfried Mureșan to do a "Romanian-style deal": “Given the reputation that Sigfried Mureșan has in Brussels, within the EPP, I am convinced that if he makes a small agreement with AUR, there will be no political problem whatsoever.”

Former President Traian Băsescu claims that designated Prime Minister Sigfried Mureșan could reach “a minor agreement” with AUR so that the government he has proposed receives Parliament’s vote, without Romania suffering in its relations with European authorities. The statement was made on Sunday evening, during a program on România TV.

Băsescu says that the reputation Mureșan enjoys in Brussels and within the European People’s Party would reduce the risk of political or financial consequences for Romania. In the former head of state’s view, even a government formula backed by AUR could move forward if the EPP decided to support the designated prime minister.

Traian Băsescu says that such cooperation could also be advantageous for AUR, which would enter an area of cooperation with traditional European parties. He stressed that, in certain situations, the MEPs of the parliamentary group to which AUR belongs vote in the same direction as the EPP.

The former president believes that Romania is going through a “bad and dangerous” period and needs a stable government. He warns that, at some point, the state could encounter difficulties paying pensions and salaries.

“I’m telling you one thing: given the reputation Sigfried Mureșan has in Brussels, within the EPP, I am convinced that if he reaches a minor agreement with AUR, there will be no political problem. Let’s see—it would also be an advantage for AUR, because they would enter the respectable world, recognized at home as well, since they are not rejected in Brussels; in many cases, the parliamentary group to which AUR belongs votes like the EPP, so they find common points of political interest. It remains to be seen,” Traian Băsescu said on Sunday evening, during a program on România TV.
