Traian Băsescu mocks Siegfried Mureșan after he was nominated for the position of prime minister

Former President Traian Băsescu criticized, on Facebook on Saturday, the nomination of Siegfried Mureșan for the position of prime minister, mocking the negative reactions that emerged in the public sphere and defending the politician’s European profile.

In a post titled “This Nomination Is Making Us Angry!”, Băsescu described Mureșan as “a man well educated in Romania and Germany” and “fully respected in Brussels.” The former president suggested that the nomination of a prime minister who supports the rule of law, judicial independence and the fight against corruption bothers certain political groups.

Băsescu said that “the army of manipulation and disinformation” immediately began attacking the designated prime minister, who was portrayed as a “traitor,” “the Germans’ man” or associated with alleged obscure interests. In contrast, the former head of state mocked the idea that Romania would need a prime minister without qualifications and indifferent to the deficit issue.

Traian Băsescu also recently spoke about his political relationship with Siegfried Mureșan. He claimed that he “invented him as a politician,” being the first party leader to include him on the PMP list for the European Parliament elections. Mureșan later left for the PNL, a decision Băsescu said he did not appreciate.
