President Nicușor Dan promulgated on Monday the Law regarding the National Program for the Accessibility of Housing, titled 'Lift for Life'. The purpose of the law is to create a regulatory framework that facilitates the physical accessibility of condominiums with 3 or more floors, including in protected areas.
Local authorities can use funds from their own budgets to design, build, and install lifts or alternative solutions, such as mechanical stairs or ramps, in buildings that do not have a lift. The program will be implemented by local authorities, which will benefit from funding from European funds, the state budget, and other sources.
PSD Senator Robert Cazanciuc emphasized that 3.5 million Romanians live in 88,000 apartment buildings without a lift, and the project includes a pilot phase with 100 buildings in each county. The estimated cost for installing an external lift is approximately 50,000 euros per staircase.
