Nicuşor Dan promulgates the “Motorcyclists’ Law” / Motorcycles may use public transport lanes

President Nicuşor Dan promulgated on Tuesday the law amending regulations on the use of public roads and introducing new facilities for motorcyclists, moped riders and cyclists. The legislation aims to ease traffic congestion and will allow motorcycles and mopeds to use lanes designated for public transport, under conditions established by the road administrator.

The law also stipulates that motorcyclists, moped riders and cyclists may move alongside queues of vehicles stopped at traffic lights or at level crossings, at a speed of no more than 20 km/h. The maneuver is permitted only if there is sufficient lateral space and other road users are not impeded.

Passing a motorcycle or moped alongside a vehicle traveling in the same direction will no longer be considered overtaking if the lane marking is not crossed. At signalized intersections and railway crossings with barriers or half-barriers, a three-meter safety space for motorcycles and mopeds will be marked.

Local authorities will have to arrange dedicated parking spaces in public car parks with at least six spaces. Protective helmets must be approved for the vehicle category and fastened correctly. The Government has 60 days from the law’s entry into force to amend the implementing regulations.
