TASS promoted George Simion after he accused Romania of a “dictatorship” following the detention of Călin Georgescu

The Russian news agency TASS promoted AUR leader George Simion after he accused the Romanian authorities of “dictatorship” following the detention of Călin Georgescu. TASS, an official Kremlin agency and one of Russia’s main propaganda channels, presented Simion’s statements in a report about the reactions of the opposition in Romania.

“Any one of us could be next. Stop the abuses! Romania is a dictatorship,” George Simion stated, quoted by TASS via Rador. The agency headlined that Romania’s opposition had accused the authorities of dictatorship following Călin Georgescu’s detention.

Georgescu was detained on Monday, September 21, for 24 hours by DIICOT prosecutors. According to the information presented in the article, he is accused of having defrauded a businessman of 1.1 million euros. Prosecutors were expected to ask the court to order his pretrial detention for 30 days.

George Simion has repeatedly adopted narratives associated with Russian propaganda on issues concerning Ukraine, the European Union, energy, and security. TASS’s promotion of his statements gives the Kremlin another opportunity to amplify political messages favorable to its own narratives about Romania.
