PSD President Sorin Grindeanu called on Thursday, on the International Day of Older Persons, for the resumption of the pension indexation provided for by law. He argued that pensioners have borne one of the heaviest burdens of the austerity measures and that their purchasing power has declined significantly.
In a message posted on Facebook, Grindeanu stated that pensions have been frozen for two years and described the situation as unfair. The PSD leader called for a change in political direction and argued that respect for pensioners must be demonstrated by upholding their rights, not merely through statements.
“The pension indexation provided for by law must once again be implemented,” Sorin Grindeanu stated. He added that Romania needs a government that places the dignity of the people who contributed to the country’s development ahead of “short-sighted accounting.”
The statements came after the government proposed by Siegfried Mureșan failed to obtain the votes necessary for investiture on Wednesday. At the joint plenary session, 321 of the 464 lawmakers were present, and 197 votes were validly cast: 182 in favor and 15 against. At least 233 votes were required for investiture.
