PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan rejects the Liberals’ return to government alongside the PSD and compares the Social Democrats’ invitation to a hypothetical proposal by Vladimir Putin addressed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Thank you for the invitation from some PSD members to return to government alongside them. We politely decline it,” the MEP wrote on Facebook.
Mureșan argues that the PSD’s offer is “as if,” after the illegal and illegitimate invasion of Ukraine, Putin invited Zelenskyy to join Russia “in order to continue being attacked.” He concluded by stating that the PNL has its own future and that the PSD “is not part of our future.”
The statement came after Social Democrat MEP Victor Negrescu said that a PSD-PNL-USR government remains possible if the Liberals and USR abandon the established red lines. Asked whether the PSD would in turn accept a prime minister proposed by the Liberals, Negrescu did not provide a definitive answer.
