Siegfried Mureșan: putting public finances in order and stopping the waste of public money does not mean austerity

Designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan said he aims to bring order to public finances and reduce wasteful government spending, without efficiency measures being confused with austerity. He made the statement in a post published on his Facebook page.

Mureșan argued that the term “austerity” is used too often by politicians seeking to defend unnecessary spending. He said that any effort to reduce waste, control spending and streamline the state apparatus is immediately attacked by populist politicians.

The designated prime minister argued that money spent without justification by public institutions means fewer resources for citizens and for the projects Romania needs. In his view, every leu wasted by the state is a leu that can no longer go to schools, hospitals, infrastructure or investment.

“Let’s not confuse stopping waste with austerity,” Mureșan said, emphasizing that his objective is to manage public money more efficiently, not to unjustifiably cut spending that supports essential services.
