The Social Democrats of Romania (PSD) have allied with the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) to overthrow Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's government, which has sparked critical reactions from European parliamentarians. This alliance is seen as a violation of PSD's commitment not to collaborate with extremist forces, according to the president of the European Green Party, Vula Tsetsi.

The movement highlights the discrepancies between the political red lines established in Brussels and national realities, where the rise of the far right complicates governance. European socialists were not aware of PSD's plans, and the president of the Group of Socialists and Democrats, Iratxe García, expressed her expectations for collaboration with pro-European forces.

In the context of the 2024 European elections, right-wing populist parties are gaining influence, complicating the situation for European socialists. Criticism from other political groups underscores the need for socialists to clarify their position regarding alliances with the far right. PSD argues that the decision to support a motion of censure is in line with its withdrawal from the government, minimizing the importance of the alliance with AUR.
