Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Friday at Europa FM that the retirement age for military personnel and police officers will need to increase, considering that many of them retire at very young ages, between 47 and 52 years. The government will come next week with a proposal in this regard, emphasizing that the current situation is not economically sustainable. Bolojan mentioned that, alongside raising the retirement age, it is also necessary to adjust the amount of pensions based on the specifics of the activities performed, taking into account the differences between various roles in the army. He also emphasized that the indexing of pensions no longer accurately reflects reality, and correcting these discrepancies will take time. The Prime Minister stated that the savings generated by raising the retirement age will be used to adjust pensions, but warned that rapid changes cannot be made in this complex system.
"Regarding the aspects related to military pensions and pensions in general, how long do people benefit from pensions after they reach retirement age? The pension fund, if it is not funded by the state budget, cannot ensure pensions are paid. This is as clear as it gets. When my generation retires, those born in the years '68-'70, we are 450,000-500,000 people... when we retire, in 7-8 years, the generations entering the labor market will be 200,000 people, 250,000 people. So, in the coming years, if we want to have a pension system that is at least bearable, which can pay pensions, we need to have more people working. "Why? Because we have categories that retire at 47-52 years. Like it or not, whether a prime minister wants it or not, these are dictated by economic reality; for these categories that have the possibility of retiring far too early, it is no longer sustainable to continue down this path. Therefore, the retirement age for military personnel and police officers will increase; there is no other possibility," stated Ilie Bolojan at Europa FM.
