The PNL deputies, Gigel Știrbu and Alexandru Muraru, have initiated a bill in the Senate whereby May 10 would be designated as the National Independence Day of Romania, a national holiday on which there will be no work. If the proposal is adopted, Romanians will benefit from 18 legal non-working days instead of 17, as is currently the case. The project amends Article 139 of Law 53/2003 - the Labor Code. Currently, Romanians have 17 legal holidays, including January 1 and 2, the Day of the Union, Easter, and Christmas. The day of May 10 has significant historical importance, marking the proclamation of Independence, the beginning of the reign of Carol I, and the transformation of Romania into a kingdom. Between 1866 and 1947, May 10 was celebrated as National Day, symbolizing independence and national unity. The project is now in the Senate, and the Chamber of Deputies will have the final decision.
