April 7 could become a national day dedicated to Mircea Lucescu after the legislative proposal received the favorable vote of a majority of the members of the Culture Committee. The initiative, backed by 35 lawmakers from several political parties, aims to honor the coach’s contribution to raising Romania’s profile in Romanian, European and global sport.
The bill has already been adopted by the Senate and will next be debated and voted on by the Chamber of Deputies. If it passes this chamber, the law will be sent to President Nicușor Dan for promulgation.
According to the initiators, every year on April 7, sports competitions, cultural and educational events, as well as activities commemorating and celebrating Mircea Lucescu’s career, could be organized. The events could be supported by central and local authorities, cultural and sports institutions, schools, federations, sports clubs and nongovernmental organizations.
Adopting the law would be a first, as the name of a sportsperson would officially be associated with a national day. A recent precedent is 2026, declared the “Year of Nadia Comăneci” 50 years after her historic achievement at the Montreal Olympic Games.
