PNL announces that it does not support the proposal by the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) to amend the political parties law and that it will put forward an alternative legislative initiative. The Liberals argue that a law with an electoral component should be drafted through a parliamentary initiative, within a special committee representing all parliamentary parties.
PNL criticizes the fact that the bill was proposed by an institution led by a PSD representative and initiated by a PSD government, arguing that it could reflect the party’s electoral interests. The party also rejects transferring powers such as the establishment and deregistration of parties and the approval of political alliances to the AEP.
The Liberals announce that they will propose depoliticizing the AEP’s executive leadership and establishing a supervisory council representing all parliamentary parties. The measures would strengthen the authority’s subordination to Parliament.
The AEP bill would replace Law No. 14/2003 and proposes raising the minimum number of founding members from three to 100. The procedure for registering parties would be moved from the Bucharest Tribunal to the AEP, where applications would be examined by panels of five randomly appointed employees. The document also sets out rules on party names, internal organization, leadership terms and the protection of members subject to disciplinary sanctions.
