The Senate adopted the bill under which parents in single-parent families could receive three additional days of annual leave each year. The proposal was approved with 86 votes in favor and 22 abstentions, but has not yet entered into force.

The bill will be debated and voted on by the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making body. If adopted, promulgated by the president of Romania and published in the Official Gazette, parents raising their children alone could receive 23 days of annual leave, compared with the minimum 20 days currently provided for by labor legislation.

The measure is intended for employees from single-parent families and aims to give them more time to care for their children and handle family responsibilities. Its initiators argue that these parents must single-handedly provide both for their children’s upbringing and for the family’s financial support.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics, in 2025 Romania had approximately 160,000 families consisting of a single parent and one or more children. In about 85% of cases, the parent raising the children alone is the mother. The measure can be applied only after the parliamentary procedure and the promulgation stages have been completed.
