Traian Băsescu states that Nicușor Dan acted correctly by appointing Adrian Veștea, in the conditions where the parties failed to come up with a viable solution for forming the government. According to Băsescu, the priority of the head of state is to quickly provide Romania with a functional executive after weeks of political deadlock.
However, the former president appreciated that Nicușor Dan should have informed the PNL leader, Ilie Bolojan, in advance about the intention to appoint Veștea, even if he was not obliged to ask for his approval. In his opinion, the issue is one of political communication, not of respecting the Constitution.
Băsescu also sent a message to Ilie Bolojan, asking him for "maturity" to avoid a split in PNL and to support finding a governing solution. He expressed his conviction that if the liberals support the Veștea Government, it has a chance to obtain the Parliament's vote.
