Former President Traian Băsescu told Digi24 that Nicușor Dan temporarily avoided a suspension procedure by accepting the government led by Luca Niculescu. According to Băsescu, the current political formula provides the president with stability, but the tacit understanding with the PSD will not last in the long term.
“No party gives gifts indefinitely; at some point, the chain of affection will break—it depends when. If the social situation worsens, the PSD will cast off any form of responsibility. It may even move toward suspension if the president gives them arguments,” Băsescu believes.
Băsescu claims that Sorin Grindeanu indirectly controls the government through Deputy Prime Minister Neacșu, even though he does not hold a position in the cabinet. The former head of state said that ministers will receive directions from the party, and that the government will be politically coordinated from within the PSD.
In his view, Nicușor Dan avoided a major risk during negotiations to form the executive, after refusing to support the scenario of dissolving Parliament. This move could have secured the necessary votes, but it would have created the conditions for a suspension.
Băsescu warned that the PSD could resort to suspension if the social situation worsens and the president provides political grounds. He ruled out a formal alliance between the PSD and AUR and questioned a possible electoral rapprochement between the PNL and USR, citing the lack of leaders capable of mobilizing the parties.
