Kelemen Hunor, the leader of UDMR, stated that the scandal that led to the resignation of the former interim Minister of Culture, Demeter András István, is the result of manipulation, based on the evaluations of the managers of performing arts institutions and the publication of an old recording. Hunor emphasized that Demeter's statements were taken out of context and suggested that the timing of the publication of the recording, made a few months later, is not coincidental. The scandal erupted after an audio recording was made public, in which Demeter uses vulgar language regarding 'national interest'.
Kelemen Hunor mentioned that, although he called for Demeter's resignation for the language used, he appreciated his quick reaction, which understood the seriousness of the situation.
"In 2025, the story in a context I do not know, the events of 2011-2012. And then there was this discussion about what he said to that prosecutor who was investigating the case. And yes, from this point of view, truly, the vulgar language that was recorded as it appeared on that site from Maramureș, of which until yesterday I had not heard (...). So someone recorded Mr. Demeter last November, if the information is true, and he was so outraged that he waited until May 2026. He listened exactly at that moment when he could hit directly at him, taking it out of context. He did not tell what it was about... and then it appeared ethnicized and vulgar what he said. And I said we must stop here, because if we do not stop, it will hit us all. Because things will be approached in another key," said Kelemen Hunor.
