PNL Vice President Gigel Știrbu publicly criticized the outfits and luxury displayed at the christening of the son of Alfred Simonis, president of the Timiș County Council, an event held Saturday in Timișoara. The liberal accused the Social Democratic leaders and their guests of ostentation and being disconnected from Romanians’ problems.
In a Facebook post titled “Halloween at the PSD-ers’!”, Știrbu described the party as “the christening of the caviar socialists” and claimed that the guests had shown off furs, jewelry, cars, and very expensive watches. He argued that the event’s lavishness contrasts with the population’s financial difficulties and the lack of funds for pensions, salaries, and hospitals.
The PNL leader extended his criticism to the political class, speaking of a “caste of idlers with party membership cards” and accusing the existence of a cross-party system that had amassed fortunes while Romania remained behind in terms of infrastructure and public services. The statements represent Gigel Știrbu’s political position and are not accompanied, in the cited material, by reactions from the people targeted.
At the event, Sorin Grindeanu was the child’s godfather. Politicians such as Lia Olguța Vasilescu, Alexandru Rogobete, Alexandru Rafila, Florin Manole, and Daniel Băluță also attended. Among the invited artists were Al Bano and Theo Rose.
