UDMR President Kelemen Hunor criticized on Monday, November 2, the way PSD leaders and their partners presented themselves at the christening of Alfred Simonis’s son, saying the images were “arrogant” at a time when Romania is facing economic problems.
Speaking on Euronews Romania, Kelemen Hunor said politicians cannot send messages about the hardships citizens are experiencing while also appearing at lavish events. He said he was left “perplexed” after seeing the images and argued that the public’s reactions reflect “people’s anger and nervousness.”
The christening of Alfred Simonis’s son, president of the Timiș County Council, took place on Saturday, and the child’s godfather was Social Democratic leader Sorin Grindeanu. Several politicians attended the party, including Lia Olguța Vasilescu, Sorin Ionescu, Alexandru Rogobete, Alexandru Rafila, Florin Manole, Daniel Băluță, and Bogdan Ivan.
Images from the event generated online comments about luxury and opulence. Sorina Docuz, the partner of former Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, wore a gray dress accessorized with fur that internet users claimed might be chinchilla and could cost tens of thousands of lei. Al Bano and Theo Rose performed at the party.
