Eugen Tomac said that he resigned from the position of president of the People's Movement Party (PMP) on Wednesday, a day before being appointed prime minister by President Nicușor Dan.
Tomac, born in the village of Babele in Ukraine, is the first ethnic Romanian from this country who could become the Prime Minister of Romania.
He came to Romania at 17 through a scholarship program, then began his political career in the Presidential Administration and as Secretary of State for Romanians everywhere.
He was elected deputy in 2012 and a Member of the European Parliament since 2019, being re-elected in 2024.
Tomac was president of the PMP for about seven years, having a close relationship with former president Traian Băsescu.
Although he lives in Belgium, Tomac owns land in Romania and invests in cryptocurrencies.
His political discourse is pro-European and pro-NATO, focused on supporting Romanian communities in the diaspora.
