Eugen Tomac, honorary adviser to President Nicușor Dan on relations with Romanians abroad, said Thursday evening on Digi24 that early elections are not a solution to Romania’s political crisis, but risk prolonging and deepening it. In his view, early elections would be “a gift to Putin” and could make the country vulnerable in a complicated regional context.
Tomac argued that Romania needs a rational and transparent political compromise that maintains its pro-Western course, its partnership with the United States and its relationship with the European Union. He warned that instability could be exploited by forces promoting narratives favorable to the Kremlin.
The presidential adviser said that the prime minister’s name is not essential, but rather the parliamentary majority the prime minister can build. The statement was made in the context of negotiations to form a government and consultations announced by Nicușor Dan for Monday at Cotroceni Palace, when the president is expected to appoint a new prime minister.
Nicușor Dan has also rejected the idea of early elections, arguing that they would paralyze Romania for at least five months, including with regard to the budget revision, and would undermine investor confidence. Tomac expressed hope that the parties would reach a majority to install a government.
