Acting Interior Minister Cătălin Predoiu warned on Wednesday that holding snap elections could deepen political instability and cause Romania’s “economic sinking.” In a message posted on Facebook, he called on the parties of the former coalition to return to government and continue the reforms launched in 2025.
Predoiu compared the current political situation to a “Titanic” of national politics, arguing that the risks have been known for months, but that party leaders have failed to reach an agreement to avoid a crisis. He criticized some politicians’ concern with obtaining better percentages after snap elections instead of finding a stable solution.
According to the minister, prolonging the instability could impoverish Romanian citizens and companies and affect the country’s strategic position. Predoiu called snap elections a “roulette” that could benefit those who want a vulnerable and irrelevant Romania.
In his view, the parties of the former coalition were given both a chance and the responsibility in 2025 to ensure Romania’s economic, social, political, and military stability. He called on them to overcome their differences and rebuild the alliance.
