The legal committee in the Senate, together with the special committee 'Romania without domestic violence', has adopted a report on the draft law aimed at preventing and combating femicide. This law is considered "necessary" by the initiators, given the lack of a legal definition and centralized data, which has led to the state's delayed reactions. The draft defines femicide as an extreme form of gender-based violence and provides protective measures for orphaned children, harsher penalties for gender-motivated violence, and education in schools on gender equality issues. Alina Gorghiu, the chair of the committee, emphasizes the importance of the swift adoption of the law to shift from reaction to prevention, stating that the lives of women and children must be a priority for the state.
