The Romanian Senate adopted, on May 27, a legislative project that significantly extends the restrictions on smoking and the use of electronic vaping devices. The measure prohibits not only traditional cigarettes but also electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco devices, and refill bottles in enclosed public spaces, public transport, children's playgrounds, and other areas of collective use. The project passed with 40 votes "for", 22 "against", and 14 abstentions, despite a negative report from the specialized committee. The new regulation amends Law no. 349/2002 and introduces a general smoking ban in all enclosed public spaces, with the exception of facilities for individuals deprived of liberty. The initiators argue that the measure aims to reduce tobacco consumption, protect non-smokers from the effects of passive smoking, and discourage the initiation of this habit among young people. The project is set to enter the final debate in the Chamber of Deputies.
