The Parliament of Hungary decided on Wednesday to remain a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), thus reversing the decision of the former government led by Viktor Orbán to withdraw from this international tribunal. The Orbán government announced last year its withdrawal in the context of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit, who is facing an arrest warrant issued by the ICC for war crimes.
International critics have been directed at the Hungarian government for not executing the arrest warrant. The bill submitted by the current Prime Minister Péter Magyar, which will come into effect on June 2, emphasizes the importance of maintaining Hungary's participation in the ICC for holding accountable those who commit international crimes.
The ICC's oversight body welcomed Hungary's decision, which was a founding member of the court, signing the Rome Statute in 1999. Withdrawal would have left Hungary as the only country in the European Union without a signature on this statute.
