Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar arrived in Brussels on Thursday to discuss the unlocking of essential European funds for Hungary. In a video message posted on Facebook, he stated that they are "very close to an agreement." The European Union suspended funding for Hungary during the term of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, citing non-compliance with the rule of law standards and anti-corruption measures.
Magyar mentioned that he will sign a political agreement with the EU this week and that he will meet with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to resolve the last misunderstandings. He also emphasized that Hungary will request to join the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
Regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU, Magyar stated that Hungary will support negotiations only after an agreement is reached concerning the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. The Hungarian government is under pressure to unlock European recovery funds amounting to 6.5 billion euros by August 31, as well as other structural funds of approximately 7 billion euros.
