USR President Dominic Fritz argues that early parliamentary elections represent a genuine political solution for bringing Romania out of the crisis, amid rising prices and financial difficulties for the population. He made the statement on Tuesday evening on Digi24.
Fritz said that early elections should not be treated as a “constitutional curiosity,” but as a mechanism through which decision-making power returns to citizens when politicians fail to find a solution to the existing crisis. He rejected the technical and tactical arguments invoked against holding the vote, arguing that they do not justify prolonging the political disputes.
“We must no longer treat early elections as a constitutional curiosity; rather, they are a genuine political solution to give people back the power to decide for themselves if those who created the crisis fail to do so. I believe it can be organized; there are others who must make this decision, but these technical and tactical arguments are not strong enough to tell citizens: we’re sorry, let politicians, especially those who created this crisis, continue arguing among themselves for months, making all sorts of arrangements because, in fact, we do not trust you to take over leadership and decide again which direction the country should go. We cannot make the decision about early elections based on a possible outcome and say that if we like this outcome, we will hold early elections, and if not, we will not. Democracy does not work that way, nor does the sovereignty of the people,” Dominic Fritz said on Tuesday evening on Digi 24.
