Member of the European Parliament Diana Iovanovici Șoșoacă was rejected by the Court of Justice of the European Union in her attempt to suspend the decision of the European Parliament regarding the lifting of her immunity. The court concluded that the arguments put forward by Șoșoacă are unfounded, thus maintaining the Parliament's decision.
On April 28, 2026, the European Parliament voted to lift her immunity at the request of the Romanian authorities, following alleged criminal acts, including the assault of Italian journalists. The court explained that parliamentary immunity can be lifted if there is no direct link between a parliamentarian's statements and the exercise of their mandate.
Only a single statement was protected by immunity, being considered part of her parliamentary activity. Diana Șoșoacă has recently been criticized for her public behavior, including dancing in a pool alongside supporters.
