European Parliament member Diana Șoșoacă publicly criticized DIICOT after searches were conducted on Monday, September 21, at the home of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu. In a message posted on Facebook, she accused the institution and the intelligence services of acting abusively and politically, using extremely harsh language against the authorities.
Șoșoacă argued that the searches should not have taken place in the owners’ absence and challenged the way DIICOT conducts its investigations. The European Parliament member said her law firm was prepared to help Georgescu, despite the disagreements between them.
Călin Georgescu was picked up by DIICOT prosecutors while in traffic and taken in for questioning. Subsequently, investigators searched his home, an operation that lasted approximately nine hours. According to DIICOT, the former candidate is being investigated in a case concerning the establishment of an organized criminal group and continued fraud, with estimated damages exceeding €1.1 million. Supporters gathered outside his home and DIICOT headquarters, chanting that Georgescu was innocent.
