AUR will call for snap elections and an end to the “handcuff spectacle” at the consultations convened on Monday by President Nicușor Dan at Cotroceni Palace, the party’s leader, George Simion, announced. He specified that he would not personally attend the meeting, but that he had appointed a delegation to convey the party’s position.
Simion said, in a message posted on TikTok, that he was heading to Bucharest, but did not want to take part in consultations with what he called “the usurper at Cotroceni.” According to him, AUR will request that snap elections be organized as soon as possible and that the actions it considers a “handcuff spectacle” be stopped.
The AUR leader also rejected the possibility that the party might vote to approve a new government. He criticized former members of the party who supported this option and reaffirmed that AUR lawmakers would not support any government formula until Călin Georgescu is released.
The position had also been expressed in Parliament on September 30, after the government proposed by Siegfried Mureșan was rejected in the vote. Simion then linked the vote to Georgescu’s legal situation, stating that the party would support another government option only after his “release.” The consultations at Cotroceni are taking place against the backdrop of political negotiations regarding the formation of a new majority and a government.
