The AUR and SOS parliamentary groups in the Chamber of Deputies have requested the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry committee to examine the impact of migration on public order and national security. The request was officially submitted together with a draft decision and an explanatory memorandum.
The initiators claim that, between 2022 and 2026, the number of foreign citizens, particularly from Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan, increased significantly amid the issuance of work permits. AUR and SOS say that data from the General Inspectorate for Immigration and the Border Police would indicate that some of them ended up in situations of illegal residence or attempted to leave Romania illegally for the Schengen Area.
The committee would examine compliance with legislation on the entry and residence of foreign citizens, the effectiveness of measures to combat illegal migration, and how the authorities manage the phenomenon of secondary migration. This refers to situations in which people who entered an EU member state legally subsequently attempt to reach other member states illegally. The candidates for the committee were not mentioned in the submitted request.
