Andrei Pleșu: An epic of the unknown hero – or the truth about the revolution

For many years, the truth about the revolution has been sought. Until now, I believe, nothing definitive has emerged on the path of this search... So, for now, I am satisfied with my own truth about the episode in question, a lived truth that no scenario or hermeneutic finesse can annul.

The various "explanatory" versions cover a wide spectrum of phantasmagorias and deviations, from science fiction to private delirium. It amuses me (with dark circles under my eyes) to present below a document that reached me beforehand, I no longer know in what context. It is the "stunning revelation" of a citizen about the historical mystery, which he explains without pedantic documents, without "objective" research, not as a witness or "analyst", but as a direct participant involved and, in fact, as the initiator and director of the entire circumstance. The author seems to be a kind of Candiano Popescu of the "events of December": a vigorous republican, a valiant fighter, a true "ploieștean" brought by history in the midst and at the peak of the crowd. Here is the text:

"I, the undersigned M.C. [...], fully aware of the cause, with the responsibility of the author of the facts, past and future, make the following declaration public in front of anyone: I have made the greatest individual and ligative (sic!) contribution to the victory of the revolution of December 1989, of Christianity and democracy in Romania and not only! The personal motivation with which I got involved [...] was the constant concern for freedom of expression, for the fair promotion and conversion of values... this is the meaning of 'liberty', a word with which I myself proclaimed the crowd on December 21, 1989, from the very midst of this crowd gathered at the Intercontinental hotel, around the table brought to the roadway from the Dunărea restaurant, in front of the 'parking' sign. 'You are free!': this proclamation made by me then – based on the observation of the factual situation – was the ideatic element that determined the fate, confirmed the irreversibility of the victory of the Romanian revolution. [...]

I realized that, enlightened by God, I am unique in doing something for this world following the movement 'Christmas 1968' which, on Christmas Eve, I raised (from provocation, animation, to directing and ensuring) from among the students, da capo al fine, during the time when I was a student at the faculty of electronics – where the selection criteria and demands reached unparalleled levels anywhere else. With this movement, I managed to mark the peak of communism – both in terms of magnitude and temporality – its removal thus becoming a matter of time comparable to that of its ascent. Highlighting myself for other such deeds, my fellow students recommended me and directed me to my classmate Popescu [...] who, demonstrating procedural skills and concerns, initiated the formation of a center-center-right party, for which he was sentenced to a year of hard labor in the Jiu Valley – 'for re-education' – after which he declared to me that he had abandoned our endeavor. Under these conditions, the greatest national hero of Romanian history – anonymous, a name I have assumed with honor in representing the party – was to ensure the ideatic perpetuation of the anti-communist resistance formation [...].

Immediately after the imbalance of December 21, 1989 of Ceaușescu, which synchronized masterfully the gathering of the crowd [...], I methodically compiled, punctually, depending on the fulfillment of specific conditions, the activity of this revolutionary crowd [...]. I established the de facto state with the de jure one, proclaiming to the revolutionary crowd: 'You are free!', which the crowd assumed with the slogan 'Freedom!' (December 21, 1989 Inter). With the exception of derisory manifestations, or out of desperation, at the army's attempt to offensively act, I gathered around me and urged the revolutionary mass to kneel, determined not to yield, a fact that led to the disaffection of the army as an institution (December 21, 1989 Inter). I validated with the crowd the list of the Doina Cornea-Iliescu government, the last known later, but endorsed by the five previously known as opponents or dissidents (December 22, 1989 ex C.C.). I, together with the crowd, moved to disarm the former nomenclature, the only one that Ceaușescu had not disarmed, co-opted (coupled) to the Carlos network – from the residential neighborhood. [...] Without letting the situation slip out of control at the cost of subsequent misery for the country, I defused the conflict of the crowd with the Soviet diplomat of Gorbachev (December 22, 1989 TVRL). I helped Adrian Păunescu to publish Scânteia Poporului. I brought the army to the side of the revolutionaries and the program, after which I introduced the paratrooper platoon and the tank infantry into the defense device of the Television and implemented the programmatic appeal: 'Gentlemen!' (December 22, 1989 evening TV). I removed armed danger sources from around and in the vicinity of the Television (December 22/23, 1989 Television). I controlled access through gate 2 at Romanian Television (December 22/23, 1989 Television). I requested consultation for the army and logistical support from the British Embassy regarding the diversionist and terrorist phenomenon from the Ceaușescu-Carlos network (December 23, 1989 in the area). I gathered colleagues to say 'Our Father' at work (December 23, 1989 work). Together with the concrete mixer drivers and with weapons brought from the Pipera platform, I organized the access barrier to the Television (December 23/24, 1989 concrete mixer Pipera). Thus, I formed the group that would outline the program implemented in the manner shown above. After these assurances with sufficient course of the Revolution, the period of continuous monitoring of this activity followed, of increasing the awareness of the masses and of founding the political party, of involvement in the Christian-democratic politics which I later brought to the leadership of the nation's destiny."

With this, 'Anonymous' completed his mission. From now on, he awaits nothing but a page with a photo in some alternative manual or perhaps the leading role in a film by Sergiu Nicolaescu. And politically speaking, 'Anonymous' can also be honored as a source of contemporary 'sovereignism', which understands 'independence' as a bombastic isolation and popular glory, based on self-adoration..
