In Romania, 17 cases of infection with the West Nile virus have been confirmed, which has led authorities to impose restrictions on blood donation. Individuals recovered from West Nile cannot donate for 120 days, and those with flu-like symptoms must postpone donation. In counties with confirmed cases, donated blood is tested and quarantined for 4-5 days. These measures affect the availability of platelets, considering their short shelf life, and doctors are advised to limit blood consumption until the end of October.
