The Data Act, which will come into force on September 12, 2025, provides EU consumers with enhanced rights over the data collected by their vehicles. Owners will be able to access, delete, and share the information generated by their vehicles, facilitating the choice of service providers and obtaining cheaper insurance. Car manufacturers will be required to relinquish exclusive control over this data, ensuring that users can access the information free of charge. Additionally, from September 12, 2026, all new cars will need to allow access to data from the outset. This radically changes the relationship between users and manufacturers, but also raises concerns regarding data protection.
