Gazprom has challenged the Moldovan authorities' decision to withdraw the license of its subsidiary Moldovagaz, transferring gas distribution to Energocom. The move, which Gazprom says is damaging, is based on disputes over Moldova's alleged $709 million arrears to the company. Although Moldova denies the existence of these debts, Gazprom argues that the Moldovan government's actions affect the country's energy security and has threatened to take action to protect its interests. Moldova is seeking to reduce its dependence on Russian gas and has agreements with European suppliers.
