WhatsApp is testing a new feature in the beta version for iOS, which will allow users to choose a unique username, thus replacing the phone number in initiating conversations. According to WABetaInfo, users will no longer have to share their number to be contacted. To check access to this feature, users need to open the profile settings in the app, where they will find a dedicated option for the username. Strict rules apply to the choice of the name, which must contain only lowercase letters, numbers, dots, and underscores, having a length between 3 and 35 characters. Additionally, the name cannot start with 'www.' and cannot contain web domain extensions. The username must be available across all Meta platforms, and users who already use it on Instagram or Facebook will need to confirm that they are the owners of it. Experts recommend using a different name to maintain privacy. After setting up the username, users can enable an optional four-digit key, which adds an extra layer of protection. Conversations initiated through usernames will be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that WhatsApp cannot access the content of the messages. The feature will initially be available to a limited group of users, with access to be expanded later.
