The Supreme Council for National Defense, led by President Nicușor Dan, approved on Monday the Romanian Army’s Armament Plan for the 2027–2036 period and a program for transformation, development, and equipping through 2044. The decisions were made in the context of changes in the regional and global security environment and Romania’s commitment to increase defense spending.

The plan for the next ten years aims to align operational needs with available financial resources and provides for the consolidation of existing capabilities, as well as the development of new ones that are flexible, mobile, and sustainable.

Romania has committed to allocating 5% of GDP to defense and related expenditures by 2035: 3.5% for defense and 1.5% for related areas.

The Supreme Council for National Defense also approved the document concerning the implementation of the European SAFE program, intended to modernize the national defense industry and develop the production of military systems.

The Council also analyzed the presence of U.S. troops in Romania and the status of the dialogue on strengthening the U.S. military posture on the Eastern Flank. The additional personnel and capabilities were not announced. An interinstitutional group is working to establish the conditions for providing logistical support to U.S. forces.
